Sara Royall

Sara Royal is one of those people you think must somehow have more hours in the day than the rest of us. Or maybe she just does not sleep at all? Crafting, making jams, helping at the sanctuary… And that is just some parts of what she does for us!

First things first: How did you find Hallswood?
- I first found out about Hallswood when I was looking for somewhere to volunteer and saw a post on facebook appealing for shop volunteers. I have always loved animals and crafting so this seemed ideal.

How long have you been volunteering now and what do you help with?
- I have been volunteering since Sep 2019. I first helped out in the shop on Magdalen St then quickly moved to helping out with the recycling scheme, sorting through the huge amount that was being collected all over Norwich, then boxing it up to send off to Terracycle. I also helped out at the jumble sales. Unfortunately when covid hit I was unable to continue with sorting and concentrated on making stuff her at home to raise funds for the sanctuary – crocheted & knitted items, rainbows, aprons, bunting, masks, bags, purple poppies – anything really that we can sell. I help the jammers make jam, marmalade, chutney and pickles. I also have a stall at home in my driveway where I sell handmade items, plants and preserves. However I was missing helping out on a regular basis and since October 2020 I have been assisting Sarah with looking after the hedgehogs at the sanctuary. I help feed, water and clean out three times a week and also help Rachael in the main sanctuary one day a week with feeding and watering the animals and birds and any other jobs that need doing. I also have 7 foster hedgehogs here at home that I am looking after for the winter before they can be released in the spring. During the lockdowns, every day I have fed the many swans in Wroxham that rely on the holiday makers that usually visit the village with food that has kindly been donated to the sanctuary.

What is your favourite part about helping Hallswood?
- My favourite part of helping Hallswood is actually spending hands on time with the many animals and birds of the sanctuary particularly the cats, pigs, swans , ducks, chickens, hedgehogs, rabbits, foxes, squirrels all of them and working with such a kind, welcoming, dedicated and strong team.

And dare I ask what the worst part is?
- The worst part is running out of time!

What would you say to encourage someone to help us by joining our crazy family of volunteers?
- I would say Go for it! Take that plunge and find out if there is something you can help with, however small, you won’t regret it.

Famous last words: what is your favorite saying?
Never go away empty handed!

Heather Chapman – Instagram

Heather Chapman, like so many of our volunteers Heather kind of just woke up one day realizing she was now a volunteer 😀 As much as we have some volunteer roles advertised on our webpage, they are really more for inspiration than anything else. The reality is that volunteering is something that is about what you feel that you can offer, be that joining a volunteer day at the sanctuary or pricing up stock in a shop.
In Heathers case it really started with a surrendered cat that needed a place to land.
Heather had just taken over a cattery (
The Garden Cattery – Your cat's home away from home) and what better place for a nervous cat to get back on her paws! 😀

First things first: How did you find Hallswood?
-I first found Hallswood when I needed somewhere to donate the cat bed that my recently adopted kitten absolutely refused to use! I took it, along with some old clothes to 177.

How long have you been volunteering now and what do you help with?
-I have been volunteering since late September 2020, when I fostered and rehabbed a cat in my cattery. She'd not had the best of home lifes so needed somewhere to relax and let her know humans were okay. I help manage Hallswoods Instagram and I have sold earrings in the Handmade Hub as well.

What is your favourite part about helping Hallswood?
-My favourite part of helping Hallswood is knowing that there are so many like-minded people who all do little things to help.

And dare I ask what the worst part is?
-My least favourite part will be sorting out the recycling bins when people don't sort properly.

What would you say to encourage someone to help us by joining our crazy family of volunteers?
-Even if you can only give an hour of your time every month, we will find something for you to do, and you'll love it!

Famous last words: what is your favorite saying?
My favourite saying? We can't all do everything, but if each one of us does something, we can make the world a better place.

Heather and her husband run a cattery together - isn't it beautiful!

The recycling team

Hallswood is nothing without our volunteers and the recycling team is no exception!
With Susan Simpson in charge, we have had many thousands of pounds donated to Hallswood thanks to the Terracycle scheme since it started. Add to that the tonnes saved from going to landfill and there really are no downsides to this 🙂

A big thank you to all the helpers making this possible - You are heroes in more ways than one.
Emma, Gillian, Tanya, Ann, David, Tom, Kevin, Ashley, Sandra, Jake, Dave, Szara, Jane, Tracy and Diane: Thank you for being awesome 🙂

Sandra Lumbard

Sandra Lumbard is one of those people who seem to always be on the go. Sitting down and doing nothing is just not a thing 😀
Not only does she volunteer with Hallswood but our friends at PACT too!

Hi Sandra!

First things first: how did you find Hallswood?
-Just over 2 years ago Lyz posted that she needed urgent accommodation for 3 cats. I watched the post all day but and eventually messaged asking if the situation was resolved, 'no', we are desperate. I said 'I don't do cats but there is a cattery at the house I have bought you can us'. Since then there's been about 24 foster cats and 1 foster dog from Hallswood!

And how long have you been volunteering now and what did you help with before lockdown?
Could you tell our followers about the amazing things you did to help us through lockdown?
-During lockdown I have had a charity stall at my gate. I also accepted recycling here.

How much have you raised so far? I say so far because I do believe that you still have a GoFundMe page up and running?
What is your favourite part of helping Hallswood?
-Favourite part is fostering the cats!

And dare I ask what the worst part is?
-Worst part is sorting the recycling.

What would you say to encourage someone to help us by joining our crazy family of volunteers?
-I would encourage anyone to volunteer, it feels great to be valued and there is a huge variety of things you can do donating as much or as little of you time as you want.

Famous last words: what is your favourite saying?
-Favourite saying is a bit morbid but I always say ' I can sit still when I'm dead, there will be more than enough time then'
